Washout Pits

concrete washout pit

The washout pit has been a practice by contractors for a long time. Contractors, EPA and environmental agencies were never really found of the washout pit method, however this was the only method available for years. Now that Vinyl-Con® Concrete Washout Systems are available nationwide to washout concrete trucks and pump trucks, the EPA and inspectors are no longer allowing washout pits in many areas.
Washout pits are constructed of hay bales and plastic. Contractors find the set up cumbersome and time consuming with an employee purchasing hay bales and setting up a washout pit, while this employee could be helping with the projects. The washout pit becomes costly very quickly with an employee wage factored in.

These washout pits are flawed by design. As the plastic and hay bales break down and allow the hazardous wastewater to escape into the storm drains and waterways. Also, pump trucks are unable to washout in a washout pit because of the height of the hay bales. The pump truck can not washout into a pit without breaking down hay bales and generally end up washing out on the ground next to the washout pit. This allows all concrete contamination to enter the storm drains.

Once the contractor has washed out all concrete trucks the water in a washout pit must evaporate prior to disposing of the washout pit. This may never happen depending on the location of the construction site. Again, contractors need to clean up and move on to the next job. Contaminate water is then dumped onto the ground and into the storm drains while attempting to clean up the washout pit. This excavation of hay bales, plastic and concrete is time consuming and again costly to pay an employee to dispose of this washout pit.
Overall the washout pit is not effective and becomes flawed. The EPA and environmental agencies have realized this method to be flawed and no longer allow this method in many areas. Most contractors find the washout pit costly and time consuming.

Sludge Boxes

Sludge boxes are much like a garbage dumpster that have also been used in attempt to contain concrete washout material. A sludge box is usually lined with plastic to prevent it from leaking. Again, as with the hay bale washout pits this is a flawed method. As you can see from the picture it does not work. The sludge boxes are not watertight allowing water to leak onto the ground and into the storm drains.

Also, the sludge boxes are too high for concrete tucks or pump trucks to washout into the box. This leaves the drivers washing onto the ground. We have to be concerned of our natural habitat in our waterways and also the contamination of soil left behind for the homeowner.

Metal Bins
metal bin
concrete metal bin

Metal bins have their place in the concrete washout market. Although many leak due to lack of maintenance, they do have the ability to be watertight. The concrete trucks and pump trucks are able to washout with the metal bin.

The metal bin is only for a large job and is only made in only one size. It is overkill for the smaller jobs with less than 35 concrete trucks. Vinyl-Con® Washout Systems are available in three sizes to accommodate any size job from largest to smallest. The largest will washout 77+ concrete trucks and hold 1,163 gallons and the smallest will washout 10+ concrete trucks and hold 157 gallons.

Also, the metal bins are very expensive to rent with charges for delivery, daily rent, fuel surcharges, pump fees, relocation fees and pick up fees to name a few. Any delays on the construction project will accumulate additional rental hours. The metal bin rental often costs the contractor much more than first intended causing cost overruns and ultimately a cut into profits. Vinyl-Con® Concrete Washout Systems is a purchase with a one time cost, plus you can reuse the Vinyl-Con® on your next construction job over and over again. The Vinyl-Con® Concrete Washout Systems will gain the contractor approximately an 200%+ cost savings over the metal bin.

The metal bins are also not available in many areas and states nationwide. Vinyl-Con® Concrete Washout Systems are available anywhere in the nation with overnight delivery.

When metal bins are available for rent contractors must reserve delivery and service times 24-28 hours in advance. This becomes cumbersome and ineffective when a contractor is trying to guess when the metal bin might be full and need to be serviced over a 24-48 hour time period. If the metal bin becomes full before the service truck comes to pump it, this creates a problem with no place to washout. The contractor can not call off concrete trucks and close the project down for the day. Generally the concrete trucks will washout onto the ground until another metal bin is available, resulting in the contractor receiving a "red tag" and ultimately paying a hefty fine. This type of miscalculation is inevitable by the contractor who cannot possibly monitor exactly when the metal bin will be full.

Vinyl-Con® Concrete Washout Systems are ready to purchase for the Free standard 5-7 day delivery or overnight delivery. Available in three sizes the contractor can place the Vinyl-Con® in the back of his truck until ready to use or set up on the job site indefinitely. No extra cost and no cost overruns. When the Vinyl-Con® Washout Systems is full the contractor lifts out the filter bag and inserts another filter bag. It is that easy. No miscalculation or costly oversights. Our storm drains and waterways are always kept clean.

Also available are different wastewater treatment options to recycle, discharge on the ground or into a POTW. Take a look at our environmentally safe products to rid of contaminated wastewater on your construction job site.

Fill (1) Filter Bag full of solids and the Vinyl-Con will be full of contaminated water. Once filter bag and Vinyl-Con are both full, it takes (1) Zero-Con Bag to treat the water. Stir the Zero-Con granuals into the Vinyl-Con Washout while the filter bag is still in the container, agitate water. Lift filter bag out with solids inside. Treat pH of water in Vinyl-Con and discharge from the Vinyl-Con discharge valve on side of container. Reuse Vinyl-Con with another filter bag and Zero-Con.

* Easiest to use

* Most ecomomical

* 100% recycleable project in many cases.

It takes a total of (4) filter bags and (1) Aqua-Solution bag to dispose of contaminated wastewater. Fill the first (3) filter bags with solids. Lift each filter bag out of Vinyl-Con as it is full, leaving the water to drain into the watertight container. Once Vinyl-Con is full of contaminated water, place fourth filter bag into Vinyl-Con. The water will permeate up through the filter bag. Once filter bag is full of water broadcast (1) Aqua-Solution Bag into water and watch it turn to gel. Lift fourth filter bag out full of gelled water and dispose/recycle at the same place you are taking the solids. Most first time contractors will purchase in terms of sets. Once the set is used the Vinyl-Con is reusable and the contractor will purchase Filter Bags and Aqua-Solution.
