Concrete Wastewater that is on a construction job site generally contains a pH well above a 12. Any washout wastewater is considered to be harmful if the pH is over 12. Most drinking water for humans is around pH level of 7.

High pH levels effect the fish and wildlife in our water ways including : DEATH, damage to outer skin, gills and eyes. The safe range for aquatic life is between 6.5-9.0 pH. Again the average pH for concrete washout water is 12pH or higher. This contaminated water will clog fish gills and ultimately reduce the amount of oxygen available in the natural water ways. Immediate death of fish coupled with inhibited fish-bearing will impair our ecosystem causing serious permanent damage.

High pH levels also show adverse effects on vegetation and soil. The high pH can damage the soil and inhibit plant growth. The safe range for plant growth is 6.5-7.0 pH. If plants are growing in soil contaminated with concrete washout water with pH levels of 12 and higher, who knows if the crops are good for us to eat.
